New Delhi, April 18, 2014 – Apex traders’ body Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has signed an MoU with ecommerce player eBay to train domestic retailers to use online market space as an additional tool for expanding their business.
The two entities will set up an eCommerce centre of excellence within the CAIT Retail School.
The confederation has been strongly opposing foreign investment in the Indian retail sector, but feels e-commerce will be helpful for the small and medium enterprises sector.
The centre of excellence will launch a nationwide campaign among the business community to upscale them.
The MoU will enable Indian traders to export via eBay to 201 countries and sell at 4,306 Indian locations. The campaign will empower traders to boost their business through online domestic trade without having an adverse affect on brick and mortar shops.
Going global
Latif Nathani, MD, eBay India, said: “CAIT is an excellent partner with its large base of 60 million traders conducting business in retail trade. We look forward to enabling their member-traders for a successful e-commerce business and creating an additional source of livelihood for them by enabling both retail exports of Indian goods and widespread national trade.”
Added Praveen Khandelwal, National Secretary General, CAIT: “The strategy of providing education and awareness among the trading community will extend their customer base beyond their city and reach consumers worldwide.”
The Indian e-commerce market is at a nascent stage of development and is estimated at $3.2 billion.
