Bangalore, April 24, 2014 – Winston Lackin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Suriname has announced the Appointment of Mr. Asif Iqbal as the Hony. Consul of Republic of Suriname and the Ministry of External affairs in India has conveyed the concurrence of the President of the Government of India to the appointment with consular jurisdiction over the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Asif Iqbal is the Executive Director of the Latin American Caribbean Federation of India and the President of the Defense Technology Infrastructure Society of India. The Hony. Consulate will work towards strengthening the educational, scientific, cultural and economic ties between the two countries.
Suriname is a country with 37% Indian Population and was a Dutch colony till 1975. Surrounded by Brazil to the south and Atlantic sea to the North. Many Indian Diaspora speaks Dutch and Indian festivals are celebrated with great pomp and splendor. Suriname has the maximum rainforests in the world.
Suriname’s ambassador in India, Aashna Wandana Kanhai, said, “The warm hearts of Suriname’s multi ethnic citizens, are open to the world and the special trade between India and Suriname, initially vested by the Indian Diaspora to Suriname, has developed and grown to be a mature structure of cultural, economic and political co-operation and we extend full co-operation in facilitating trade and business between two countries.” Suriname is a largest exporter of Bauxite and 80% of the country is filled with Rain forests.
There will be trade delegations and official exploratory trips to Suriname organised by the Hony. Consulate in Bangalore and Hyderabad. In fact, there is a delegation that will travel to Suriname in April for exploring business opportunities in May along with the Indo Suriname Chamber of Commerce based in India. CCI Newswire
