Chennai, November 30, 2017: American International School, has been awarded LEED Gold by Green Business Certification Institute ( GBCI ), the organization that certifies all LEED green building projects worldwide. With this honour, American International School is the world’s first K-12 school to use Arc, a digital platform that tracks and measures building performance, to achieve the LEED green building certification.
During a special ceremony held at the American International School, the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certificate was presented to Mr. Alankrit V Arora, Chief Business Officer and Mr. Andrew Hoover, Head of School at AISC by Mr. Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, Managing Director – APAC & Middle East, GBCI. The school achieved certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance. Those efforts included the installation of motion sensors in the classrooms to reduce the use of electricity and rainwater harvesting for use in the gardens. The school also encourages students and staff to use minimal paper and plastic and use reusable water bottles resulting in a healthier, lower carbon lifestyle for the students.
“American International School’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership, especially within the education sector,” said Mr. Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan. “Children are the green ambassadors of tomorrow, and allowing them to see how sustainable practices are incorporated into our every day life and the buildings where we live, learn, work and play will help create a solid foundation on which we can build a cleaner, greener tomorrow for mankind.”
“As an environmentally sustainable and responsible organization, we are a leading the way in Chennai. We hope to inspire others,” said Mr. Alankrit Arora, Chief Business Officer at AISC.”In our organizational Core Beliefs, we have committed to being environmentally responsible. Our effort to engage LEED is about making good decisions that will reduce our long-term reliance on fossil fuels,” said Mr. Andrew Hoover, Head of School at AISC.
LEED was created by the U.S. Green Building Council and is the world’s most widely used green building program. Currently, there are more than 2,500 projects participating in LEED in India, representing more than one billion square feet. With a continued focus on building performance, LEED projects, like the American International School, are pursuing certification through Arc, the digital platform that uses data to help spaces measure and improve sustainability performance using a performance score. Arc helps connect actions in one place in an effort to help users make more informed decisions and continually improve performance.
