Bangalore, May 16, 2019: The Indian Music Experience will be celebrating International Museums Day on May 18th by allowing free access to the museum and sound garden for all visitors, and a conversation with and unplugged performance by Bangalore-based singer and music composer, Raghu Dixit.

The worldwide community of museums celebrates International Museums Day each year on the 18th of May. This year, the theme for the day, as mandated by the ICOM (International Council of Museums) is “Museums as cultural hubs: the future of tradition”. International Museum Day 2019 will focus on the new roles of museums as active actors in their communities, which have the power to establish dialogue between cultures.

In its endeavor to be an inclusive space, the Indian Music Experience will allow visitors entry to the museum free of charge on the day. The IME’s volunteer-guides and staff will provide guided tours and behind-the-scenes anecdotes about the set-up of the museum.  A special app-based treasure hunt will also be launched to enhance the visitors’ engagement with the museum.

On the same day, the IME will also be launching a new program series called “Up, Close and Unplugged” which will feature a conversation and unplugged performance by some of India’s best artistes, exploring their musical influences, creative process and career path. This series is based on a similar set of public programs conducted by the GRAMMY Museum (with whom the IME is now affiliated) titled ‘An evening with’, which has featured legendary artistes such as Barbara Streisand, Smokey Robinson and John Mayer. Through this series, the IME will also build its digital archive of oral histories and music of contemporary artistes, thus leaving a legacy for future generations. The first performance in the series features Bangalore’s renowned folk-rock musician Raghu Dixit, who has carved a niche both as an independent musician with his band, the Raghu Dixit Project, and as a composer in various film industries of the country. As this first program of the series is on Museums Day, it will be free of charge to the public, but by pre-registration only, through the IME’s website and social media handles. The event will be scheduled from 5:30pm – 7:00pm.
