It recently won global acclaim for its Wentworth Estate in Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu, which earned the certification for the first time among tea estates in the country.

By being Trustea verified, which assigns the Trustea logo to the produce, HML enhanced global competitiveness for its Wentworth Estate tea, as half of the 2.45 million kg of high quality orthodox tea, produced annually, is exported.

N. Dharmaraj, Chief Executive, Harrisons Malayalam Ltd, said the India Sustainable Tea programme is an initiative of Tea Board of India to develop and implement a sustainability code for the Indian domestic tea market.

The programme is jointly funded by the sustainable tea trade initiative (IDH) and Hindustan Uniliver Ltd. Solidaridad is the implementation partner of the programme with Rainforest Alliance (RA) as its technical advisor.

With increasing number of consumers worldwide insisting on and preferring plantation products complying with Trustea certification, he said, HML is aiming at enlarging its product marketability globally once its tea estates in Kerala also secure the international tea logo certification.
