Kalidas Festival – Reinvent the Tradition – begins

Mumbai, November 22, 2015: Winter in Nagpur brings fond memories of the world famous poet, as MTDC celebrates Kalidas Festival to memorize the great Sanskrit poet Kalidas and his fabulous work in the field of poetry.

The four days and three nights filled musical and dance extravaganza is organized by MTDC in association with Divisional Commissioner office. Kalidas Festival is also designed to promote the Vidarbha region and its rich legacy throughout India and across. The festival this year attracted many tourists from across the globe.

The Kalidas festival started in year 1996 is packed with stupendous performances of some of the most recognized artists in the field of dance, music and drama. Renowned artists like Veteran actress Hema Malini, Indian Santoor player, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Indian Classical dancer and Choreographer Sharmila Biswas, Kathak Maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj, Odissi dancer, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra was an Indian classical dancer and more performed at Kalidas festival in past.

Also many theatre artists get chance to show their luminous talent which adds glory to the festival. Budding artists get to showcase Maharashtra’s rich culture and heritage through their performances. The festival is celebrated at Ramtek where the festival is organized is a historic place citing its links to Lord Rama and Poet Kalidas. This is the place where Rama, Laxman and Sita are said to have ‘rested’ on their way to Vanvaas. Ramtek is also known for the place whose beauty and tranquillity inspired the great poet Kalidas to compose his famous poetry Meghdoot and is also a popular tourist destination in Maharashtra.

Kalidas was a great Sanskrit poet and dramatist. Shakuntalam, a historical drama and Meghdoot, the epic poem are the finest masterpieces in terms of human literature. Other famous literary compositions of Kalidas are ‘Abhijnanasakuntalam’, ‘Meghadootham’, ‘Raghuvamsam’ and ‘Kumarasambhavam’. The celebration of Kalidas Festival is a tribute to Kalidas and his eternal contribution to the field of poetry.
