MSMEs are keen on investments in the design and marketing of khadi products during the 12th Five Year Plan period (2012-2017) and aim to transform them into internationally-saleable commodities. The strategy in the 12th Plan period seeks to revolutionise the khadi sector by investing in production, design, value-addition and marketing of the products.
The khadi and village industries products which range from handmade paper, ready-made garments, silk muslin to honey are devoid of hype in the international market due to lack of marketing, branding and designing. To meet the demands of the market there is a need to set up 10 more NIDs in the next five years to cater to the growing designing demand of the MSME sector. The Government with the help of the Asian Development Bank is now providing assistance worth US $150 million to 300 khadi institutions.
