Neyveli Lignite Corporation has bagged the Scope Meritorious Award for Environmental Excellence and Sustainable Development for 2011-12. This is an award instituted by the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE), an apex body of public sector organisations, to recognise public sector organisations which have demonstrated extraordinary skills and have made a mark in chosen fields, said a press release. A panel of judges, chaired by Justice P.N. Bhagawati, selected NLC for this award. In a function held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, on Friday, President Pranab Mukherjee presented the award to NLC. NLC is engaged in reclamation of mines into thick forests and agricultural fields. It converts the mined-out land into more productive land, said the release. The company has adopted an integrated farming system, a novel method developed out of a collaborative project with the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, to reclaim the areas degraded by mining.
