Event Schedule & Brief:

Day 1 (23rd March’18) – 17th July by Bratya Basu

SummaryIt was the year 2003, Godhra incident had just gone by and the most infamous case of Babri Masjid demolition was already witnessed by people of the nation. In the district of Panchmahal, Gujrat communal hatred was prevailing like fire within ashes and any little spark of event could lit up the fire of riot yet again throughout the country. At such point of time 17th July 2003 trifle quarrel broke out between a bus conductor and few Muslim young men in the bus route between Eral and Dolal village of Panchmahal district. Out of sheer communal hatred false rage allegations were made against those Muslim men. Due to swift handing of the situation by the Officer-in-Charge Mr.  Dinesh Thakkar of Eral police station, Asif Mirza and company were saved from the raging crowd. They were subsequently presented before the court and the trial started. Public prosecutor Mr. Pankaj Parekh was charging the accused of rape and famous Bengali Barrister Mr. Rakesh Chatterjee was defending the convicted. As the trial went on several false witnesses were presented before the court, Bhimbhai Ravi – Master of State Bus Terminus, State Bus driver – Champaklal Chara, Bus conductor Jitubhai Damor and Nathi Ben – one of the called raped victims. Each one of them were proven lire before the court by Barrister Rakesh Chatterjee and finally he presented the other rape victim – Chinta Ben who confessed before the court that the whole incident was decorated even then the Kangaroo court continued the trial. All the State machineries were utilised to convict Asif Mirza either by hook or by crook. Even judges started speaking without legal context. Utterly disgusted by the Court proceedings Barrister Rakesh Chatterjee had to exclaim, “This is not a trial your honour, this is a circus”. The trial went on and eventually what was not suppose to happen, happened.  Conspiracy and communal hatred turned the case in their favour. Court convicted Asif Mirza and sentenced him to death and whole district of Panchmahal celebrated the heinous verdict.  Yet it could be said that all is not lost, we least found people with courage and morale fighting against evil in the society. Barrister Rakesh Chatterjee then decided to make an appeal against the verdict before  the Supreme Court and his courageous fight for justice gives us the hope that justice will definitely prevail someday.

Day 3 (25th March’18) – Shikhandi-The Story of the In Betweens

Summary: Shikhandi is perhaps one of the earliest trans-characters known in mythology. Shikhandi was meant to be born male to avenge an insult in her past life as Amba. But the bigger karmic game unfolds when she is reborn female, raised male, has a sex change (thanks to a Yaksha) on her wedding night when she runs away into the forest, and finally fulfils her destiny – to be the cause of Bhishma’s death.

A comic, tongue-in-cheek retelling of the story of Shikhandi, mixing the traditional with the contemporary, the play questions maleness, femaleness and everything in between. The play was runner-up at the Sultan Padamsee Playwriting Awards 2016. Shikhandi was also awarded Best Play at the Laadli Media Awards 2017.
