New Delhi, August 26, 2017: Social and the British Council India are organising a one day film screening of Grierson Documentaries on August 19, 2017. The Grierson Documentaries consists of six films on art, history and science. Film festivals showcasing movies from across the globe has helped in the coming together of film enthusiasts and members of the industry to discuss the art.
The Grierson documentaries are a tribute to John Grierson CBE (26 April 1898 – 19 February 1972), the pioneering Scottish documentary maker, often considered the father of British and Canadian documentary film. Grierson’s principles of documentary were that cinema’s potential for observing life could be exploited in a new art form; that the “original” actor and “original” scene are better guides than their fiction counterparts to interpreting the modern world; and that materials “thus taken from the raw” can be more real than the acted article.
Speaking at the occasion, Alan Gemmell, OBE Director India, British Council, said, “There is a huge interest and audience in India for documentaries curating interesting events and milestones in the field of history, science and culture. Documentaries are timeless, capturing an era gone by, but still relevant as they document our evolution, our progress across the ages and act as a mirror to the society. We encourage more people to participate in these film screenings.”
“Brand Social is an integral part of the cultural landscape of the young urban consumer”, says RiyaazAmlani, MD & CEO of Impresario (parent company of Social). “Curated experiences that encourage guest interaction with brand partners ensure a more meaningful experiences for the brand. We are delighted to partner with British Council and provide a platform for the screening of a curated list of documentaries for which we share a common audience. Our patrons will get the opportunity to enjoy the screening of Grierson Documentaries consisting of films on art, history and science exclusively at Social; reinstating the culture-defining Social experience”.
