The burgeoning solid waste generated by all types of industries has become a headache for the Government. Giant waste mounds have become a regular feature on the outskirts of many cities. According to latest World Waste Survey Report, some 4 billion tonnes of municipal, industrial and hazardous waste are produced every year globally. It is estimated that the world market for waste, from collection to recycling, is worth about $410 billion a year. Waste Management cannot be handled by municipal authorities alone owing to the rapid rise in solid waste creation.

Now the private sector wants to play a key role in providing waste management services economically and efficiently; and the role of this sector is well accepted in policy circles across the world. Multiple benefits include fast technology adoption, innovation potential in waste management technology and processes and new ways of recycling. Also thousands of new jobs in the recycling and waste management can be created, leading to cleaner cities and a greener economy. Waste management offers many business opportunities for the private sector like waste-collection/disposal services; operation of recycling plant; e-waste recycling; consultancy; equipment supply; organic fertilizer manufacturing; transportation; and trade in recycled materials.
