Mumbai, March 07, 2013: The second edition of the Top 5 companies moving in the right direction, identified during the 2012 assessments of The Economic Times India Manufacturing Excellence Awards in partnership with Frost & Sullivan and Frost & Sullivan’s Green Manufacturing Excellence Awards has been announced. This list developed by Frost & Sullivan based on assessments of manufacturing sites across India, focuses on six major competitive differentiators against five considered last year, these include customer focus, cost reduction, quality deployment, safety deployment, innovation adaptation and sustainable development (new competitive differentiator added for the 2012 edition).

The rationale for addition of ‘Sustainable Development’ as the sixth competitive differentiator is that it takes a holistic view to addressing concerns on social, economic and environment aspects. The objective is to improve the existing levels of understanding of companies and foster advances in sustainable development. There is a definite increase in the maturity of Indian manufacturing companies in deploying sustainable development practices mainly from an environmental and societal perspective; however, one cannot infer this as a uniform trend yet and players/markets retain the traditional short-term view towards sustainability. Moving forward, sustainable development will be a mandate for organizations to work upon and sustainability is more likely to be a critical influencer on supplier selection from a customer/ investor perspective.

Based on 2012 Assessments , the Top 5 Companies in each of the above categories are:

According to Raghavendra Rao, Vice President, Frost & Sullivan, “Across the identified differentiators, we see quite clearly that the scope of deployment and implementation is now being extended and companies are considering their extended value chain for better results and overall business benefits. Customer expectations are also constantly rising, thereby, demanding that supply chains be stronger and robust.”

“Just keeping up with the competition is no longer enough. Investors today are constantly looking out for companies with sound business performance/record of accomplishment and there is an overwhelming need today for companies to understand business sustainability clearly and what it takes to embark on this journey,” concludes Raghavendra Rao.
