Interview with Mr.KabirSiddiq, Founder and CEO of SleepyCat : India’s First Mattress-in-a-box Company.

  • What kind of challenges did you face when you brought the concept of a box mattress in India?

The major challenge faced initially was getting the whole concept of a box mattress to India. To implement the idea and to understand the whole market of mattresses in India was difficult, moreover, the audience had never heard of the concept of a “Mattress-in-a-box” and the ways around.  The customers were buying whatever the retail market had to offer. They didn’t have any idea on the pricing or on the product.

We got our boost by first placing ourselves on Amazon Launchpad which gave us a lot of recognition. From there on we slowly built our presence on social Amazon platforms and created our own Website – sleepycat.in

Some competitor bands have entered the market but we focus on giving our customers the best product, service, and experience. In order to keep the trust of our audience and to build a better bond with them, we kept our promise and are transparent about all the stages.

  • What inspired you to start your own business at such an early age?

We took advantage of the blooming e-commerce love and decided to introduce the first “Bed-in-a-box” concept in India; I was a part of the mattress industry for a few years.  I realized that the whole process of buying a mattress is time-consuming and troublesome. People get confused with all the variety and ended up buying mattresses that they were eventually not comfortable with. After thorough research of the market, I came to the  conclusion that the mattresses were extremely expensive, the reason was not that they were costly to manufacture; it was because they had a percentage for everyone in the chain, manufacturers, dealers, retailers, etc. I thought ‘why not just cut out the middleman?’ which concluded with reducing the overall cost. This made the process simple and one of a kind.

  • How are the mattresses rolled in a box?

We decided that the mattresses would be vacuum packed, neatly put them in a box and courier them easily. The mattresses are sent to all parts of India at a tenth of the traditional cost.

  • What are the future plans of SleepyCat? Any new product’s that you are
    currently working on?

We have big plans for the future. We want to be recognized as a Sleep solutions company. We will soon be launching pillows, mattress protectors and other sleep products. Be sure to hear from us soon!

  • How are you planning on your expand your company?

We have various new products coming out soon. We hope to target a larger audience through these new products and expand our reach. That is our focus for now.

  • How is SleepyCat giving back to the society?

SleepyCat has associated with NGO’s like Hope Foundation Kolkata and Robin Hood Army. We had also been in touch with Baale Mane, Banglore. We havedonated over 300 mattresses already and look to do a lot more in the coming future.

  • Can you tell us how many mattresses has SleepyCat sold? What are the
    reactions of your customers?

This past year we had achieved the mark of selling 10,000 mattresses and counting. We are hoping to sell even more this year. The remarks on Amazon have been very positive to date. And our website sales are also picking up now

  • What makes your company different from the other mattress brands?

SleepyCat is a new generation brand, we know that the customer does not have a lot of time to understand and pick through the numerous options that the mattress industry is filled with. The process is fairly simple and the mattresses are easily available on our website and on Amazon India. We’ll have the mattress delivered in 7-10 days just after a few clicks. We also have an option of one day delivery in Mumbai and Bangalore. Furthermore, the customer also has a 30 night free trial period, where if they don’t like the mattress they can return it and get a full refund. Our process is fully transparent, making us stand out from the competitor brands.

  • How exactly are the gel memory foam mattresses cost friendly compared to
    the traditional mattress brands?

Traditional mattresses come with complex materials that are not necessary for a common man; the material is also inferior in quality. We wanted to make shopping for a mattress
easy and fun, it doesn’t have to be so complicated. You can order a mattress easily and it will be delivered to you on your doorstep. Eliminating a lot of middlemen makes the mattresses cost friendly and the process just as easy.
