IPv4’s time is over. Switch over to IPv6. SMBs have to change to using this Internet protocol to catch up to the growth rate. According to a statement issued by the Government, all telecom and ISPs will have to be IPv6-compliant by the end of this year and offer IPv6 services thereafter. Federal and state government ministries and departments and public sector companies will switch over to IPv6 services by March 2012. A similar directive was issued by the US Government in September 2010.

IPv6 is mandatory for businesses in India after March 2012. As many as 2 billion individuals connect via Internet everyday which has made IPv4 addresses depleted. This would cause the ability to add and connect new devices to a halt. A new and much larger type of address known as IPv6 avoids the issue. Service providers and large enterprises are lapping up IPv6 but small and medium businesses are just thinking about due to lack of funds. Thus SMBs have to adopt to IPv6 innovatively and taking one step at a time.
