The city-based manufacturer of energy conservation technologies, Sustainable Technologies & Environmental Projects (STEPS), has announced its plans to set up a plant to convert plastic waste into light diesel, calorific value combustible gas and carbon pellets.
Earlier, the company has also come through in the generation from algae, for which it bagged the Lockheed Martin Innovations Award thrice.
Mr T Raghavendra Rao, STEPS Director, said, “We can generate diesel from algae through pyro-catalysis. We also plan to set up a 25-tonne a day capacity plant near Mumbai shortly with financial assistance from Tata Capital. It will be a multi-feed processing plant between Vasai and Bhiwandi.”
According to the company, the light diesel oil can be used to operate a diesel electric generator and furher it can be purified into petrol, kerosene and diesel. It can also be purified into aviation turbine fuel.
Few days earlier, the company has signed a 51:49 joint venture with the US-based Masada Corporation to establish a bio-methanol plant using its poly-crack technology.
Besides, the company is in advanced negotiations with PTFCV of the Netherlands, Ecosphere of Germany and Agrupalmeria of Spain, as well as US-based UP Solutions, seeking similar joint ventures (JVs).
In the same move, the company also holding talks with the carpet industry which generates a lot of plastic waste due to discarded carpets. For raw material sourcing, the company is also in talks with several industries like sugar, breweries and municipal sewerage waste plants and effluent treatment plants.
