New Delhi, June 03, 2014 – National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), constituted under the Disaster Management Act 2005 has been entrusted with the nodal national responsibility for human resource development, capacity building, training, research, documentation, awareness and policy advocacy in the field of disaster management.
India is prone to various natural disasters like flood, drought, desertification, cyclone, earthquake, landslide, forest-fire, pest-attack, epidemic, etc. Environmental degradation, including climate-change, land-use changes and natural resource degradation are aggravating disaster occurrences and impacts. To prevent environmental degradation and its adverse impact on human beings, it is necessary that society is made aware.
To create this awareness, NIDM organized an essay competition for school students under different categories on the theme “Safeguarding Environment for Disaster Risk Reduction”. NIDM will organize an Awareness Programme on the eve of “World Environment Day” (4th June 2014 at New Delhi) with an objective to create awareness among students and other sections of the society. Winners of the essay competition will be felicitated by the Chief Guest on the eve of 4th June. Dr. C.K.Varshney, an eminent Environmentalist, will deliver a special talk on “Small Islands and Climate Change – Implications for Disaster Risk Reduction” (which is also the theme of the United Nations Environment Program for the year 2014). NIDM publications titled “Bundelkhand Drought” will be released on the occasion along with “Do’s and Don’ts for Common Disasters” and two “CDs” of NIDM titled “NIDM at a Glance” and “Home Owners Recipe on Earthquake Preparedness”. An exhibition on this important issue will also be held during the programme.
