Kamala Sohonie- First Indian woman with Ph.D. In Science

New Delhi, January 19, 2018: She was the first lady to get admission to IISc, Bangalore, headed then by Nobel laureate Prof. C.V. Raman. After MSc, she was awarded with various scholarships, which enabled her to study at Cambridge University, England. She also received travelling fellowship of the American Federation of University Women – first Indian lady to receive this award. In 1939, she became first Indian lady to receive PhD in Science. In 1949 she was appointed as Head of newly started Biochemistry Department at Institute of Science, Bombay (Mumbai). She became Director of the Institute; first Indian lady to head any scientific research Institute.
